Project Update: 4th May 2016

The Know Your Place team is pleased to update you with our latest project news.

Wiltshire & Gloucestershire Know Your Place next

Work is now underway to build test websites for the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Know Your Place, bringing with it an estimated 6480 square kilometres’ additional coverage of historic maps and heritage data mapped onto Know Your Place! All being well, both counties will appear in full on the map in July 2016.

We are working with heritage partners to prepare Historic Environment Record and Collections data to be added as Information Layers and you may also have started to notice some of the Basemap layers extending into these counties (pictured) as new maps are cached during the construction. We hope you enjoy watching Know Your Place grow into the summer.

Put YOUR local heritage on the map: Take our Take 10 Challenge!

We are gearing up to launch a new campaign, and invite all researchers, local interest groups and heritage collections in the West of England to step up to the plate and take our Take 10 Challenge. The challenge is simple: Add 10 records onto Know Your Place in 10 days.

Use Know Your Place as a free platform to publicise your collections and research, and help us build a rich, SHARED, map of our heritage. To find out more about taking part, contact: Felicia.Davies@southglos.gov.uk .

Exhibition Goes to Tender

The project has just gone to open tender for the interactive digital touring exhibition. The deadline for applications is: 12.00pm Noon Monday 16th May 2016.  Suppliers are invited to register on the electronic tendering portal: www.supplyingthesouthwest.org.uk to find out more.

Taking KYP on Tour: Tell us where to go

We are inviting our Supporters’ suggestions for local landmarks and community venues around the West of England that you think should be involved in hosting the exhibition and / or its related programme of events. So far we’ve received suggestions of: Wiltshire Museum, Devizes; Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre, Chippenham; St Margaret’s Hall, Bradford on Avon; M Shed, Bristol; and Gloucestershire Libraries. But we want to consider as broad a range of geographical and type of venue as possible so get your thinking caps on!

To make your suggestion of where we should go in South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset and Somerset, please drop us a line stating:

  • Your county
  • the venue you want to nominate (including their contact details)
  • and why

Volunteering

With over 1520 hours of volunteer time donated to the project so far, our volunteers have proved worth a whopping £28.5K of in-kind contributions to our project.… and counting!

We are proud of our volunteers’ phenomenal achievement, and as the project grows, we will continue to need more volunteer help.
